  • Q: Is the original Driving License mandatory for apostille?
    Yes. The apostille is applied to the original driving license or to an official MEA-approved attachment tag. Photocopies or scans are not accepted for apostille processing.
  • Q: Can laminated smart card driving licenses be apostilled?
    Yes. Smart card and laminated licenses are apostilled safely without removing the lamination. The MEA uses a secure tag method that keeps the card intact. warning: "Do NOT try to peel the lamination yourself. This damages the chip and voids the license.
  • Q: Is a Driving License Apostille the same as an International Driving Permit (IDP)?
    No. An IDP is only a translation for short-term travel. A Driving License Apostille is a permanent legal authentication used for license exchange, employment, and long-term residency abroad.
  • Q: What if my driving license is very old, faded, or handwritten?
    In such cases, applying for a DL Extract from your RTO is strongly recommended. It is a fresh government-issued record of your driving history and is easily accepted for apostille.
  • Q: How long does the apostille process take?
    Standard processing usually takes 7–10 working days, while express service can be completed in 3–5 working days, depending on verification and MEA workload.
  • Q: Can I apply for Driving License Apostille if I am already outside India?
    Yes. You can courier your original license to our India office. We complete the apostille and return it to your overseas address via secure international courier.
  • Q: Is apostille required for all countries?
    No. Apostille is valid only for Hague Convention countries. For non-Hague countries like the UAE or Saudi Arabia, MEA attestation and embassy legalization are required instead.
  • Q: Do names on passport and driving license need to match exactly?
    Yes. Even small spelling differences can lead to rejection. If there is a mismatch, a supporting affidavit may be required before apostille.
  • Q: Can I apostille a suspended or expired driving license?
    No. The license must be valid and active in the Parivahan database. Expired or suspended licenses are not accepted for apostille.
  • Q: Is translation mandatory for apostille?
    Not always. Translation is required when the destination country does not accept English documents (such as Poland, Italy, or Germany). It is done after apostille.
  • Q: Is apostille a one-time process?
    Yes. Once apostilled, the document remains legally authenticated permanently. There is no expiry on the apostille itself.
